Breast reconstruction is applied to women whose breasts have been removed. Women generally prefer this application to have symmetrical breasts, to regain permanent breast shapes, and to improve their quality of life after cancer treatment. The breast is reconstructed to return to its former shape. It is possible to re-do the nipple and perform the breast reconstruction surgery in most women whose breasts have been removed. If only a part of the breast is removed, this surgery may not be needed.
There is more than one type of breast reconstruction. It can be performed with the help of implants (prostheses), with the patient’s tissues, or both. Breast reconstruction is usually multi-session operations and the entire process is completed in around a year. The first surgery is often large and painful, the rest of the procedures are shorter and less painful.
